The IllustratorFrederick James "Jim" Smith lives in Minnetonka, Minnesota, and works in Minneapolis. Jim has been illustrating books and preparing ad copy for over 40 years. He has illustrated the Pillsbury Dough Boy and the Marlboro Man and been the personal artist for Bing Crosby. He has also done countless creative productions for books, package designs and unique graphic images for clients such as Leo Burnett Advertising. Jim has headed up his own design studio in Minneapolis, served as a professor teaching art and commercial design to young artists, and created memorable illustrations for Fortune 500 companies. He is, in his spare time, a fine artist of elegant, realistic water colors. Doug Hollmann discovered Jim when he came upon a fully illustrated book used in the legal world to teach research entitled "Wolf v. Pig". Jim illustrated the story of the Three Little Pigs as told from the perspective of a trial after the Wolf sued the Third Little Pig for burns he got when he, the Wolf, fell down the chimney of the Third Little Pig's house into a boiling pot of water. The Pig counterclaimed for trespass, since he had clearly told the Wolf to go away. Jim's illustrations showed the characters during the original story, and the legal aftermath. Even the Wolf, with his bandaged foot, was a sympathetic character (you could tell he wasn't all bad), and Doug knew he had found the gentle artist to bring Sandra and Rudy and Axel to life. |
